Youth Hockey Instruction
For those hockey players who are ready to take their game to the next level or who want to improve their skills to make their next team, Montclair State Ice Arena offers all types of skills clinics throughout the year for players to improve. From power skating and shooting clinics to goalie clinics and stickhandling clinics, Montclair State Ice Arena has a program to enhance your hockey skills. Check out one of the classes on our schedule that are taught by our highly trained professional coaching staff.
HOCKEY INSTRUCTION
Maffei’s Mites Black Friday Half-Day Clinic & 3v3 Tournament
Fast paced games with a twist!
Work on change of direction and speed in this 80 minute clinic, so you steal the puck from your opponent and score!
Put what you learned from the clinic into play during the 3v3 round robin tournament.

Get your head up, create scoring opportunities for yourself and your teammates with an 80 minutes skills clinic led by Mike Liu.
Make sure you’re on top of your game during the clinic, as coaches will be scouting and drafting teams to play in a 3v3 tournament to end the day!

- Free full set of equipment, including skates, for first time Learn to Play participants – This includes participation in a USA Hockey sanctioned program.

If you do not sign-up for your session of Learn to Play two-weeks prior to the start date of your session then we can’t guarantee you will receive your equipment before the first practice.
Learn to Play Hockey for ages 11 and up (including adults)
For players that want to Learn to Play & “Want to be” Recreational player, this program will work on the basic skills of skating, stick-handling and shooting. Sessions will include game situations as a way to teach players to excel at the next level!

ABOUT HEAT:
GIRLS TRY HOCKEY FOR FREE! 
Join us this fall for Girls Try Hockey for Free Weekend this October 8th at 10am!
This Try Hockey for Free is designed for girls with little or no prior skating experience, open for ages 5-14. This 1-day session at community rink partners in the tri-state area will feature professional female hockey players teaching young players the basics along with the Rangers Hockey Development Team! The session includes free rental skates and loaner equipment and a post-skate meet & greet with our talent onsite. The program is limited to 65 participants and space is filled by a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants will also be able to register for the Girls Hockey League on site!

Montclair State Ice Arena offers hockey leagues and tournaments for all ages and skill levels throughout the year. From Northern New Jersey’s longest running spring league to our Rangers Rookie Series Cross Ice League, Montclair State Arena has a league for your child’s skill level. (Individual Entry Only) 
The 2024-25 JR Red Hawks House League will consist of three divisions: Squirt (9-10 Year olds), Pee Wees (11-12 Year olds) and Bantams (13-14 Year olds).
All players will receive:

Rangers Rookie Series-Ice Youth League – Ages 10 and under
Play the Game!
Once your child has the basics covered, let’s take it up a notch! Each player will have the chance to put their skills to the test in a fun and competitive environment. Participants will learn the basic game and team concepts, plus, they will build important characteristics on and off the ice: teamwork, responsibility, and respect. Twice a week, for 10 weeks, your child will have the opportunity to play games led by Rangers staff. It is a fun way to meet new teammates and play some hockey! At the end of the season, we will celebrate everyone’s accomplishments by hosting a Junior Rangers Jamboree for all of the players in the league.
Your league fee includes:
- 1 game plus 1 practice a week per season
- No long distance travel as all games are hosted at your local rink
- Junior Rangers jersey (limited to your first registration)
- Celebratory Junior Rangers Jamboree at the end of the season

The on-ice times will be the same throughout the year unless communicated.

- No long distance travel as all games are hosted at your local rink

MONTCLAIR YOUTH HOCKEY LEAGUE’S 2024 SPRING CHALLENGE SERIES 
The Spring Challenge Series is exclusive to Montclair State Arena and we are proud to offer this exciting new hockey program!
The Spring Challenge Series for 2024 was created in order to offer some variety for the full year hockey players, create parity amongst the teams in a creative and fun atmosphere. It offers a variation on the original league format and allows players of all skill levels, to get creative and see the ice from different angles by using small area games to focus on tight spaces and better utilize their skills.
The Spring Challenge Series will begin on April 1, 2024 and run for 10 weeks, completing the series mid – late June, 2024. All teams will be coached by our dedicated and talented hockey coaching staff. Jerseys will be provided.
Skills clinics/practice & Game dates/times are subject to change, however we will strive to be consistent. Please note, we will work around travel hockey tryouts weeks so as not to conflict for players.
MITES
8 Years and under (2016-2018) will be challenged by our twice per week league series. The Mite Format will consist of once per week skills sessions for 10 weeks, plus 9 weeks of cross ice games and will end on week 10 with a round robin jamboree!

SQUIRTS – BANTAMS
9-14 year olds (birth years 2010-2015) will be challenged by our twice per week league series. The Squirt through Bantam Format will consist of once per week skills clinics and/or team practices (Bantam level will include intro to checking clinics) for 10 weeks plus 3 weeks of 3v3 cross ice games, 1 week of pond hockey style tournament at the conclusion of the 3v3, then 5 weeks of 5v5 regular full ice games, and ending the season with an exciting skills competition! HIGH SCHOOL
For those players currently in 8th grade and Freshman – Juniors in high school (no graduating seniors), this challenge will meet once per week for 10 weeks. The first three weeks will be high intensity skills clinics, followed by three weeks of 3v3 play, and finishing off with four weeks of 5v5 regular full ice games!

Liu has an extensive coaching history in the NJ area, including growing the Hockey in New Jersey program to one of the largest Hockey is for Everyone programs across the NHL. Before playing 4 years at West Virginia University, he was part of the 2003 Randolph State Championship team that was inducted into the New Jersey High School Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
