Youth Hockey Instruction
For those hockey players who are ready to take their game to the next level or who want to improve their skills to make their next team, Montclair State Ice Arena offers all types of skills clinics throughout the year for players to improve. From power skating and shooting clinics to goalie clinics and stickhandling clinics, Montclair State Ice Arena has a program to enhance your hockey skills. Check out one of the classes on our schedule that are taught by our highly trained professional coaching staff.
Learn to Play Hockey – Teen 11+
This program will work on the basic skills of skating, stick-handling and shooting. Sessions will include game situations as a way to teach players to excel at the next level!
11 years old and up – Players will be divided up by age and skill level.

Rangers Learn to Play Program – 10 and under
Fall, Winter, Spring 2024-25
Your program fee covers a lot of great stuff. First-time Learn to Play participants get a free complete set of gear, including skates, as part of a USA Hockey sanctioned program. You’ll enjoy a family-friendly schedule with 10 weeks of one-hour sessions, all led by professional instructors alongside Rangers staff. Plus, there will be special guest appearances from Rangers Alumni.
Girls Try Hockey for Free
Join us this fall for Girls Try Hockey for Free Weekend this October 8th at 10am!
This Try Hockey for Free is designed for girls with little or no prior skating experience, open for ages 5-14. This 1-day session at community rink partners in the tri-state area will feature professional female hockey players teaching young players the basics along with the Rangers Hockey Development Team! The session includes free rental skates and loaner equipment and a post-skate meet & greet with our talent onsite. The program is limited to 65 participants and space is filled by a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants will also be able to register for the Girls Hockey League on site!

Bantams – Midget | Checking/Contact Clinic
For first year Bantams thru Midget players, this clinic is designed to teach and educate checking and body contact! Players will learn how to safely and efficiently give and receive checks, angle, and strengthen body positioning in both drills and game situations.

2025 Spring Challenge Series
(INDIVIDUAL PLAYER REGISTRATIONS ONLY)
The Spring Challenge Series is exclusive to Montclair State Arena and we are proud to offer this for a 2nd season.
The Spring Challenge Series was created for INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS in order to offer some variety in skill development, create parity amongst the teams in a creative and fun atmosphere. It offers a variation on the original league format and allows players of all skill levels, to get creative and see the ice from different angles by using small area games to focus on tight spaces and better utilize their skills.
The Spring Challenge Series will begin on the week of 3/31/25 and run for 10 weeks, completing the series mid – late June. All teams will be coached by our dedicated and talented hockey coaching staff. Jerseys will be provided.
Skills clinics will run on Thursdays or Fridays, with games played on both Saturdays & Sundays (Mites – Bantams) through the duration of the season. Times are TBD.

Ages 10 and under
Play the Game!
Once your child has the basics covered, let’s take it up a notch! Each player will have the chance to put their skills to the test in a fun and competitive environment. Participants will learn the basic game and team concepts, plus, they will build important characteristics on and off the ice: teamwork, responsibility, and respect. Twice a week, for 10 weeks, your child will have the opportunity to play games led by Rangers staff. It is a fun way to meet new teammates and play some hockey! At the end of the season, we will celebrate everyone’s accomplishments by hosting a Junior Rangers Jamboree for all of the players in the league.
Your league fee includes:
- 1 game plus 1 practice a week per season
- No long distance travel as all games are hosted at your local rink
- Junior Rangers jersey (limited to your first registration)
- Celebratory Junior Rangers Jamboree at the end of the season

The 2024-25 JR Red Hawks House League will consist of three divisions: Squirt (9-10 Year olds), Pee Wees (11-12 Year olds) and Bantams (13-14 Year olds).

Liu has an extensive coaching history in the NJ area, including growing the Hockey in New Jersey program to one of the largest Hockey is for Everyone programs across the NHL. Before playing 4 years at West Virginia University, he was part of the 2003 Randolph State Championship team that was inducted into the New Jersey High School Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
