Hockey is for everyone, and Montclair offers pathways for players of all ages to get started and grow in the game. Through our partnership with the New York Rangers, we offer Junior Rangers Learn to Play Hockey for kids 10 and under.
For teens and adults, our MSU Ice Arena Learn to Play Hockey program provides the same welcoming, beginner-friendly introduction to the game, making it easy and affordable for new players to take the ice.
Whether you’re joining hockey for the first time or returning after years away, our programs focus on skating, stickhandling, passing, shooting, and building confidence in a fun, supportive environment.
10 and under
Getting started in hockey has never been easier or more convenient! This introductory program for ages 5-10 years will teach your child the basic skills of skating, stick-handling, passing and shooting through (10) 1-hour lessons.
In addition, they will learn the importance of hardwork, teamwork and sportsmanship. Best of all, your child’s registration also includes a FREE brand new set of head to toe CCM hockey equipment custom fitted by our friends at Pure Hockey.
Please register at least two weeks before your Learn to Play session begins to ensure your equipment is ready for your first practice. Equipment delivery cannot be guaranteed for later registrations.

Join the New York Rangers for a fun and empowering All Girls Learn to Play hockey program at Montclair State Ice Arena! Designed specifically for girls ages 5–10, this program introduces young players to the fundamentals of hockey in a supportive, girls-only environment.
and fostering a love for the game. Skates and loaner gear are provided, so all your player needs is enthusiasm and a smile.
