What started as a summer camp experience at Montclair State University Ice Arena has turned into a friendship, an ice dance partnership and an exciting competitive skating journey for two young skaters.
Just one year ago, Mia Destefani, 7, and Adam Cheng, 9, were taking their first steps into figure skating through the arena’s Summer Camp Program. Today, they’re training together as ice dance partners, competing at events across the country and discovering just how far their love of skating can take them.

A Friendship That Started on the Ice
After summer camp, both Mia and Adam decided to continue developing their skating skills by joining the Competition Team Program at Montclair State University Ice Arena.
Although they initially trained as individual skaters, it didn’t take long for the two to become great friends.
Their connection caught the attention of Krigor Studio coaches Igor Lukanin and Kristen Fraser, who noticed how much Mia and Adam enjoyed skating together and saw the potential for something special.
The coaches approached their parents about the possibility of becoming ice dance partners, and both families happily agreed.
What began as a friendship at the rink soon became a new adventure on the ice.

Growing Together as Ice Dance Partners
Since becoming partners, Mia and Adam have continued to develop both individually and as a team.
With guidance from their coaches at Krigor Studio, they’re building their skating skills, learning to work together and gaining confidence with every practice.
They’re also spending more time at the arena, surrounded by older skaters who inspire them and show them what’s possible through dedication and hard work.
In just one year, their skating journey has already taken them well beyond their home rink.

From Montclair State University Ice Arena to Competitions Across the Country
Mia and Adam have already gained valuable competitive experience, travelling to skating events in Maryland, Lake Placid, Philadelphia and right here in New Jersey.
For two young skaters who only began their journey last year, these experiences represent some pretty exciting milestones!
Along the way, they’re learning much more than skating technique. They’re building teamwork, confidence, friendships and memories that will stay with them long after each competition.

Every Skating Journey Starts Somewhere
Mia and Adam’s story is a wonderful example of the opportunities that can grow from a child’s first experience on the ice.
At Montclair State University Ice Arena, programs like Summer Camp, Learn to Skate and the Competition Team give young skaters opportunities to discover the sport, develop their skills and explore where skating might take them.
For Mia and Adam, that first summer camp led to a friendship, a partnership and an exciting new chapter in competitive ice dance.
And the best part? Their skating journey is just getting started!
We’re so excited to watch Mia and Adam continue to grow, learn and make memories together. Congratulations to both skaters, their families and their coaches!
