And helping players discover they belong somewhere.
Montclair’s hockey programs are supported by a dedicated coaching staff and rink team who help create positive experiences for players and families across every stage of development.
As part of that broader community, several members of the Montclair State University Men’s Hockey team also coach and work throughout the arena. Their experiences offered a unique perspective into what makes House League meaningful — and why so many players continue coming back year after year.
More Than Skill Development
One of the strongest themes that emerged was that House League creates opportunities for players to grow in ways that extend beyond hockey.
Players develop skills on the ice, but they also gain confidence, learn teamwork, and build friendships.
Braden Ryan reflected on one of his favorite memories from coaching a Jr Redhawks House League team. His team made the playoffs, but that wasn’t what stayed with him. It was everything around it.
“They had fun the entire season. Every practice, everyone showed up to every single game and at the end of the year they had a team party and just seeing the smiles on their face… they made a whole new group of friends.”
That reflection captured something coaches across Montclair’s programs see every season. The most meaningful moments often aren’t tied to the final score.
They happen when players become more confident. When friendships form. When kids start looking forward to coming to the rink.
Why House League Matters
House League is supported by an experienced group of coaches and staff who help create positive experiences for players at every stage of their hockey journey.
Throughout our conversations, several of the MSU student-athletes reflected on how meaningful it has been to spend time supporting younger players alongside that broader coaching community.
Many talked about remembering what it felt like to be younger players themselves. Now they have an opportunity to help create those same experiences for someone else.
That connection matters. Younger players gain confidence. Families build community. And coaches help shape experiences that extend well beyond hockey.
Building a Hockey Community
House League plays an important role within the Montclair hockey community.
Supported by dedicated coaches, rink staff, and role models throughout the building, it creates opportunities for players to learn the game, build confidence, and develop friendships that extend beyond the ice.
For the MSU student-athletes featured in this story, being involved in that experience gave them another perspective on what makes Montclair special.
