Adult Instructional Hockey League at Montclair State Ice Arena: From Learning the Game to Playing It

For many adults, hockey is something they’ve always wanted to try — but never quite knew how to start. Others may have skated years ago and feel unsure about jumping back into league play. That’s exactly where the Adult Instructional Hockey League (AIL) at Montclair State Ice Arena comes in.

Designed to bridge the gap between basic skills and full league play, the Adult Instructional League offers a structured, supportive, and confidence-building pathway for adults who want to truly learn the game — not just skate through it.

A Smarter Way to Learn Adult Hockey

Unlike traditional adult leagues that assume players already understand positioning, systems, and game flow, the AIL is intentionally built for learning.

“This program is about teaching hockey — not just running games,” says Mike Liu, Hockey Director at Montclair State Ice Arena.
“We take players step by step, helping them understand how the game works so they can feel confident when they move into league play.”

The result is a program that welcomes true beginners while still challenging developing players.

What Makes the Adult Instructional League Different?

The Adult Instructional League follows a progressive 12-week format that mirrors how players actually learn best as adults.

1. Skill Development & Conditioning

The program begins with structured practices focused on:

  • skating efficiency and balance
  • puck control and passing fundamentals
  • positioning and hockey-specific conditioning

These sessions build a foundation so players aren’t overwhelmed once game situations are introduced.

2. Instructional Scrimmages

Next, players move into controlled scrimmages where coaches actively teach during play. Whistles stop the action to explain:

  • where players should be positioned
  • why certain decisions work better than others
  • how to read developing plays

“Adults learn differently than kids,” Liu explains. “They want to know why they’re doing something. We coach in real time so players start seeing the game instead of just reacting to it.”

3. League-Style Games With Coaching Support

The final phase introduces a league environment with:

  • coached games
  • benches run by instructors
  • guidance throughout gameplay

Players experience the pace and structure of league hockey — but with the safety net of coaching and feedback.

What’s Included in the Program?

A typical Adult Instructional League session includes:

  • 4 structured practices
  • 2 controlled instructional scrimmages
  • 4 coached league games
  • Ongoing feedback and instruction from experienced coaches

This balanced format allows players to develop skills, apply them, and grow confident playing real hockey.

Who Is the Adult Instructional League For?

This program is ideal for:

  • adults new to hockey
  • skaters transitioning from Learn to Play programs
  • former players returning after time away
  • adults who want instruction before joining a traditional league

“No one is expected to have it all figured out,” says Liu. “We build players up so they feel ready — mentally and physically — for the next step.”

More Than Hockey: Confidence, Community, and Progress

Beyond the ice, the Adult Instructional League creates something just as important: community. Players train together, learn together, and gain confidence together — often forming teams that continue into future leagues.

For many, the program becomes the moment hockey finally clicks.

“You see it all the time,” Liu adds. “Players start hesitant, unsure where to go. By the end of the session, they’re calling for passes, reading plays, and actually enjoying the game.”
